Fire Safety Training in Hampshire, West Sussex and the South Coast
The law requires every employer to ensure that their staff receive appropriate fire safety information, instruction and training. For most businesses, this means at minimum a basic fire awareness course for all staff, and a more advanced fire warden or fire marshal qualification for those responsible for managing an evacuation. We deliver both courses on-site at your premises - tailored to your building, your people and your specific fire risks - with no disruption to your working day.

Fire Warden, Fire Marshal and Fire Safety Training Courses in Hampshire, Southampton and West Sussex
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for any commercial premises must ensure that staff receive appropriate fire safety training. This includes information about the fire risks identified in your fire risk assessment, the action to take on discovering a fire, how to raise the alarm, evacuation procedures and the location and use of firefighting equipment. Failure to provide adequate training is a breach of the Order and can result in enforcement action.
All training is delivered on-site at your premises. This approach ensures the content is specific to your building, your escape routes and your working environment - not a generic course delivered in a conference centre. Our trainer will work around your schedule to minimise disruption to your operation.
Basic fire awareness training is suitable for all employees and provides the foundation of fire safety knowledge required by law. The course covers:
- The causes of fire and the fire triangle - understanding how fires start and spread
- Fire hazards in the workplace - identifying risks specific to your premises
- The fire alarm system - how to raise the alarm and what the different alarm tones mean
- Evacuation procedures - escape routes, assembly points and what to do on hearing the alarm
- Fire extinguisher types and selection - which extinguisher to use on which class of fire
- Basic practical instruction on fire extinguisher use
- The role and responsibilities of fire wardens and marshals
A short assessment is completed at the end of the course. Staff who pass receive a legal certificate of competence confirming they have completed accredited fire safety training.

Fire wardens and fire marshals play a critical role in ensuring a safe and orderly evacuation in the event of a fire. Their responsibilities go significantly beyond those of a standard member of staff, and their training must reflect this. Our fire warden and fire marshal course covers all the content of the basic fire awareness course, plus:
- The legal responsibilities of a fire warden or fire marshal under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- Sweep and search procedures - how to check an area is clear before evacuation
- Managing an evacuation - directing staff and visitors to the correct exit routes
- Assisting vulnerable persons - staff with mobility issues, disabilities or special evacuation requirements
- Liaising with the emergency services on arrival
- Post-evacuation procedures - accounting for all persons at the assembly point
- Fire safety management and record keeping
- Practical fire extinguisher training
The number of fire wardens or marshals your premises requires depends on the total number of staff, the size and layout of the building, the fire risk level identified in your fire risk assessment and the number of regular visitors. As a general guide, one fire warden per floor or zone is a sensible minimum. We will advise on the appropriate number for your specific premises.
All candidates who pass the end-of-course assessment receive a legal certificate of competence. Annual refresher training is strongly recommended to maintain competency and keep certificates current.

Knowing which fire extinguisher to use, and how to use it correctly, can mean the difference between containing a small fire and a serious incident. Practical fire extinguisher training is included as standard in both our basic fire awareness and fire warden courses. Participants learn to identify the correct extinguisher for each class of fire, understand the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) and gain hands-on confidence in operating the equipment safely.
This practical element is particularly valuable for staff in high-risk environments such as commercial kitchens, workshops, warehouses and care homes, where the likelihood of needing to use an extinguisher in an emergency is higher.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must ensure that employees are provided with adequate fire safety training when they are first employed, when the risks in the premises change, and at regular intervals thereafter. The training must be repeated periodically and must be adapted to take account of any new or changed risks.
Annual refresher training is widely accepted as best practice and is increasingly required by insurers and commercial landlords. A record of training completed, including the date, the names of those trained and the content covered, should be maintained as part of your fire safety management documentation.
If your fire risk assessment identifies a shortfall in staff fire safety knowledge or the absence of competent fire wardens, that shortfall must be addressed. Training certificates provided on completion of our courses serve as documented evidence of compliance.

Yes. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for any non-domestic premises must ensure that employees receive adequate fire safety training. This must be provided when they start work, when fire risks change and at regular intervals thereafter. Failure to provide training is a breach of the Order and can result in enforcement action.
In practice, fire warden and fire marshal refer to the same role - a designated member of staff responsible for managing an evacuation in the event of a fire. Some organisations use one term, others use the other. The training we provide covers both titles and qualifies delegates to fulfil either role. Both go significantly beyond basic fire awareness, covering sweep and search, evacuation management, assisting vulnerable persons and liaison with emergency services.
The number of fire wardens required depends on the size and layout of your building, the total number of people present, the fire risk level identified in your fire risk assessment and the number of shifts or working patterns. As a general guide, one fire warden per floor or zone is a reasonable minimum. We will advise on the appropriate number for your specific premises during the training booking process.

NAO Report Highlights Ongoing Issues with Cladding Remediation
The safety of our homes and businesses is a priority for everyone, but the tragic Grenfell Tower fire of 2017 exposed significant failings in the construction and safety standards of buildings across the UK. This disaster which claimed 72 lives brought to light the dangers of combustible cladding and the systemic issues in ensuring building safety.
A recent report from the National Audit Office (NAO) highlighted serious concerns about the pace and scope of this work, and in this article we will unpack these findings.
